What’s one thing you know now that would have saved your younger self a lot of pain?

Worked for 13s

Good morning from Barcelona, where the coffee is hot, I don’t hear any birds, and today I’m getting on a boat. This morning’s prompt asks what I know now that could have saved my younger self a lot of pain.

I don’t have to search long for my answer. I wish someone had taught me financial awareness and planning. Of all the things I wish I had known earlier, this is the biggest piece.

Money decisions can feel like separate moments: paying a bill, using credit, borrowing, saving, handling an emergency. But they connect to one another, and they shape the choices available later. I wish I had understood sooner how planning, interest, debt, and savings could affect my options over time. I wish I had known what questions to ask before I was already facing the consequences.

Financial literacy is more than knowing how to add numbers or make a budget. It means understanding the tools in front of you and being able to make choices with a clearer view of what may come next. Those are skills people need, and they shouldn’t be left to chance.

There’s a lot of life in the words what could have been different. I can’t know exactly how things might have unfolded with better guidance. I do know that learning financial literacy at any point could have changed many of my choices and spared me some pain.

That is the lesson I wish I could give my younger self: learn how money works, ask questions, and make a plan. It’s the biggest thing I wish someone had taught me.
