What’s the best way to meet new people while traveling?

Good morning from the Grove, where the coffee is hot and the birds are starting to wake in the woods. October is here, bringing the beauty and flavor of autumn, and we’re grateful for it.
For me, it can start with a smile. A smile is a small way of saying, “I’m open to a conversation.” From there, curiosity can carry things along. Ask someone about the place you’re visiting. Be curious about what they’ve seen, where they’re from, or what brought them there. You don’t need a clever opening line. Sometimes a genuine question is plenty.
It also helps to let a new connection be whatever it becomes. You don’t have to meet someone with the expectation that they’ll become a lifelong friend. Maybe you share a conversation over a meal or spend an afternoon exploring together. Maybe you find a travel companion you’ll plan future trips with. Maybe you keep up with each other on social media. Maybe you come home with a wonderful memory and a story to tell.
I’ve made friends through traveling whom I still travel with. I’ve met people I keep up with online, and others who live on in my memories and stories. Each connection has its own shape, and each has added something to my travels.
So my advice is simple: smile, stay curious, and be open to the person in front of you. You don’t have to know where the conversation will lead. You only have to be willing to begin.
