What’s a book or movie that genuinely scared you?

Come sit a spell. The coffee’s hot, the birds are singing, and today’s question asks whether a book or movie ever genuinely scared me.

Two books came to mind: Swan Song and The Handmaid’s Tale. They frightened me in very different ways.

In Swan Song, it was the cruelty itself. The world had fallen apart, and some of the survivors seemed to meet desperation by becoming more brutal. That was what stayed with me: the awful things people could do to one another when everything around them was broken.

The Handmaid’s Tale scared me for another reason. I remember thinking, It’s already happening. The control over women’s bodies, the stripping away of autonomy, the way people can be reduced to what others decide they are worth—it didn’t feel like a distant, impossible future. It felt close enough to recognize. My first reaction was fear.

Those books frightened me because their horrors were human. One showed cruelty in a world pushed to its limits; the other made me look at the world around me and wonder how much warning we need before we take a threat seriously. They were stories, but the fear they left behind felt real.

Thanks for sitting with me a spell. I hope you have a warm cup nearby and a good book waiting—one that scares you just enough to make you think.
